Crashin’ n Burnin’

The Crash n Burn series has become a popular weekly racing series that attracts anywhere from 10 to 20 guys and gals a night. The format is simple, 5 drivers for 5-10 lap heats. You come off, too bad, you do not get put back on. Someone is in your lane, better luck next heat. We took ideas from 1/24th scale and use a "European Rotation" 1-3-5-4-2. Everyone races 5 heats. Scoring is broken down like so: 1st = 5 points; 2nd= 4 points; 3rd= 3 points; 4th= 2 points; 5th= 1 point. The good news is, if you come off where ever the computer scored you is where you finish. "The computer does not lie"...Well ok sometimes it does but tough luck. The top five from the heats advance to the main. The low point total from heats gets first choice of lane. Lane choice goes up from there. Meaning that the high point man from the heats, gets last pick of lane. Scoring is broken down the same way and added to your point total.

8) March 18th (B-S) Hobby: 12 Drivers made the show including Tom Lange traveling with Bob Talley tonight. Drew called to say he left Milwaukee about 4 and would be late. One important no show was Paul “Blue cars rule” Gilbertson, who was in Minot visiting with family. Looked like most of the guy’s forgot about the “BULLRING” here at Bangor Speedbowl and brought their Super Speedway cars. John Gilbertson, just back from a 4 week layoff, struggled out of the blocks in his first 2 heats but made the proper adjustments and the rest of the night was good for him. Ike turned up the heat with an impressive 22 point effort going into the feature only to wind up second to Pat Schroeder. This would prove to be Pat’s only feature entry of the evening. Schroeder has had the cars to beat this year in almost all classes, but tonight was not his best. He did have a great moment in heat 11 as he was leading the field my ½ lap only to pop out coming out of turn 4 on the last lap. Along came Billy Martin to stuff Schroeder back into the slot and still take the win. Ike was Top Dog with 26 points.

L.M.: Drew Kriebich made it in time for the late models and the time off from racing proved to be difficult for him in his ride, a Javelin no less. Only coming up with 8 points, Drew was noticeably disappointed and the night did get better. Johnny G shook off the problems of hobby to take 22 points, enough to put him at the top of the points going into the feature. Greg Oliver would spoil Johnny’s feature hopes, taking the checkers just ahead of John. John would also have the only horseshoe given out tonight coming in heat 8. Running third, well behind the front two, John crossed the line on lap 5 in front to claim the win after the front two tangled. In the 11th heat, John and Greg rode side by side for a good number of late laps with Johnny using a text book move, a twitch of the tail out of turn 4 on the last lap to send Oliver out of his slot. “Beautiful move” Rich told Johnny as he crossed the line. Oliver just grinned and said “next time.” John was Top Dog with 26 points.

Vintage: Tim and Kyler Gulden came prepared for this class as both made it to the feature with dad Tim edging out 2nd ahead of Kyler in 3rd. Johnny made it two classes in a row top dog going into the feature with 22 points again. A last place spot in the main was a big disappointment for him, but he was happy just to be running strong. Billy Martin claimed the win over Tim. In Ike Shimshak’s first heat, the comment was made he could get a couple laps practice as he was late getting to the track. “I don’t need no stinkin practice, I’m that f**king good.” and proceeded to take 4th. Ike did make the feature so some embarrassment was eased. Bill was Top Dog with 24 points.

Nast jet: Some of the best racing was seen in the last class of the night as the Nastjets took to the track. Johnny and Rich put on a heck of a show in heat 3 as Hohlfeld just managed to hold off Gilbertson as they both went an extra lap not knowing the race was over with John beating Rich to the line by an inch. But wait, the race was over the previous lap and Rich was ahead at that time. Hohlfeld continued his strong Nastjet program with 23 points going into the feature, high points, but wrecks all over the place relegated him to a second place finish behind race winner Drew. In one incident, Billy Martin was slammed in the rear, taking out the rear screw post. By the next heat Martin was back and showing no problems. Rich was Top Dog with 27 points.

Track owner Greg Oliver and Ike Shimshak shared Lead Foot of The Week honors each with 79 points.

As leader Pat Schroeder ( white car ) was heading for the finish line for his 4th heat win out of 5 he was collected by fellow teammate driver Drew Kreibich ending his chances for the win.
