Four friends from high school first got together in September 1970 to race their HO scale slot cars. That first year they ran 2 classes, NASCAR & Trans Am. The birth of RCHORA started on a 4 lane track. John G, Paul G and Rich H have been racing with each other since 1971. Mark S came into the club in 1973. These four drivers are the only ones still actively racing from the seventies. A yearbook has been put out for the club ever since 1974. Almost 40 years later the group has evolved into more than 15 regular racers on 6 lane computerized track (use 5 inner lanes). In 2005 an idea was tossed around about racing every week with a new format. This format became to be known as Crash and Burn. The title of the series says it all. There is crashing and, well hopefully not too much, burning. Once are car de-slots it sits there. There is no marshalling of any car. If a car is in your lane, I’m sorry but it sits there. This is become the main form of racing for the RCHORA club. However, at least once a month the club tries to race the traditional format of racing that dates back to the 70’s. The club is always looking for new members, there are no fees to join. All one needs to do is show up to a race and be ready to have some fun. For more information contact Paul G (afxtjets@aol.com).

~Thoughts From Others~ Drew K - Donnie Ames played a vital part in bringing the club where it is today. His passion for helping others was one that kept myself and fellow K&S Motorsports partner Pat S competitive. He was our primary motor builder and the reason for all of my success early. He let me run a NASCAR motor that I drove to a feature win and afterwards sold me the car for $20. He will forever be missed and there is no one in this club that can build motors the way he could, and probably never will be one. |

On October 27, 2007 RCHORA took a big hit with the death of the "Rocketman" Donnie Ames while bird hunting in Iowa. At Sunday's RCHORA events all drivers present took a turn behind the wheel of Don's #16 Subway Taurus in remembrance of what he has meant to this club over the past 22 years. Don was a fierce competitor and motor builder who would give you the shirt of his back. He knew only one speed, FAST, and he drove every lap like it was the last one. There was no one better at building a motor and he did not discriminate who it was for. |
